Slag Discharging Chute – Case Study

The Problem

This client required a suitable method of ensuring the safe disposal of slag discharge from a raised furnace positioned up on a mezzanine floor, down to a waste skip on the ground floor. We designed and manufactured a bespoke heat-resistant chute to significantly reduce potential health and safety hazards.

The Challenges

Due to the process of the waste slag disposal being a manual process via shovel, employees are naturally mindful when actioning. However, the risk of accidental spillage is increased due to the furnace being at height. The risk of spillage are direct harm to a member of staff, as well as being exposed to unsafe flooring conditions.

The Solution

In-house at EDS, we designed and manufactured a bespoke chute capable of resisting the heat of the slag whilst it was guided into the waste skip below by internally coating the steel with specialist paint. Due to the skip requiring removal by forklift, we allowed for a clearance throughout the design. Following installation, the client is now confident that their waste slag is being disposed of with safe precaution.
